Many people dream of owning and operating a family owned business. Certainly some of the most popular businesses around were once family owned. A Hard fact is that many family businesses, however successful, sometimes fail to move from one generation to another. Here are some tips for keeping the family business intact across multiple generations.

With family businesses quarrels, issues with entitlement, and family pressures seem to be leading causes of the over 70% of family owned businesses that fail to survive succession.

The Tips:

1. Keep family issues and business separate. With a family business they will certainly mix at times, but keep them as separate as possible. This will keep them separate during times of succession.

2. When it comes to moving past succession it is also useful to plan for many successions. When you plan for not just the next generation but for the many generations that follow you will have a leg up when comes time to pass the torch.

3. Eliminate feelings of entitlement. Many times children can skimp on education and effort because they truly believe that the family business is always waiting for them.

4. Avoid pressuring children and grandchildren into the business. They may truly not be as passionate about running the business in the long run.

A unique use of these tips has been illustrated by a trucking company that has survived succession and now has a 4th generation of family members involved with the family business. They have instituted a policy within the business to eliminate the sense of entitlement. Children now must work out side the family business for 2 years and an undergraduate education is required.

Following the tips above will hopefully help you plan ahead you can easily navigate the succession highway.
